Pathbreaking Concepts

This year, Opel is celebrating a very special anniversary: 50 years ago, in June 1964, Opel opened its new “Styling” studio in Rüsselsheim, establishing the first modern design organization in Europe and thus pioneering automotive design outside of the United States. The building, staff and processes, were pretty similar to GM’s state-of-the-art styling studios in Detroit, Michigan – the biggest design organization in the world at the time.

RÜSSELSHEIM is becoming the TALENT Pool
As a consequence, Opel also became the first European manufacturer to build and present a concept car – the Experimental GT that premiered at the 1965 IAA. Already in the 1960s, Opel Styling turned out to be a talent pool for many, international designers from many countries who came to Rüsselsheim and further developed their talent. As a result, Opel Styling was exposed to many international influences from a very early stage. This is why many Opel design legends showcase visionary, innovative and trendsetting styling and technologies, which have influenced the automobile arena over the last 50 years.

Design philosophy: sustainable and enduring
Opel was and is an innovative, emotional and powerful German brand. “Even if we introduced our philosophy ‹Sculptural Artistry meets German Precision›, just a few years ago with the Insignia, this description would have always been a perfect one at any time before”, says Mark Adams, GM Europe Vice-President of Design. Adams: “The Insignia was our first modern, day production car that carried these values. But it is also easy to imagine how cars could continue to follow this philosophy in 2060 and still be contemporary. A lot of competitors had their own design language, but these ideas never lasted. A design philosophy, as we understand it, is something sustainable and enduring. It can be valid for a hundred years. That’s why we not only proudly look back on our history, but also look forward to another 50 years full of innovation.”

The beginning

In the early 1960s, GM Styling was the biggest and most powerful design organization in the world. By 1956, GM Styling’s 1,200 staff members had settled into the brand new building designed by Eero Saarinen at GM’s Technical Center in Warren, near Detroit. Opel benefited considerably from GM’s power and vast expertise.

The new, ultra-modern Opel Styling facility that opened in 1964 in the N10 building was directly inspired by GM Styling in Detroit. This new set-up propelled Opel to the leading edge of automotive design in Europe.
