Low waistline, large glass surfaces, a decorative strip along the side: the Kadett A Caravan looks light, clear and surprisingly modern. When Opel introduced it in 1963, no one suspected that it would result in a history that now spans more than six decades. The name has changed. Kadett became Astra, Caravan became Sports Tourer. The idea has remained: to pack as much everyday usability as possible into a compact car.
One car for almost everything
The Kadett A Caravan comes at the right time. Germany is on the move. Families go on holiday, craftsmen transport tools, sales representatives are on the road. A car suddenly has to be able to do many things at the same time. This is exactly why Opel develops the caravan. Its name is a neologism of ‘car’ and ‘van’ – a passenger car with the practical qualities of a van.
The engineers take a surprisingly modern approach. The tailgate swings upwards and at the same time serves as weather protection during loading – anything but a matter of course in the early 1960s. The rear bench can be folded down and extends the cargo space to one and a half metres. Even a refrigerator fits inside, as Opel confidently writes in the brochure at the time.
The fuel cap also moves to the outside. „You never have the smell of gasoline in the boot,“ Opel advertises with a wink – a small dig at the Beetle. The Kadett Caravan is a family car, load carrier and holiday companion at the same time. Three cars in one.
The idea continues to evolve
Over the years, the estate changes. The practical load carrier for craftsmen and families becomes a versatile companion for work and leisure. It remains suitable for everyday use, but become even more comfortable and offers even more driving pleasure.
After all, this development is also reflected in the name. Since 2010, the estate versions of the Astra have carried the suffix Sports Tourer. It stands for a vehicle that combines function and emotion. Spaciousness still plays a major role – and so do modern technologies, high-quality equipment and a design that goes far beyond pure practicality.
The idea lives on
The new Astra Sports Tourer is the consistent continuation of this idea. Designed, engineered and made in Rüsselsheim, it combines the strengths of its predecessors with the possibilities of the present. The ingredients are familiar: spaciousness, variability and well-thought-out solutions for everyday life. Up to 1,634 litres of luggage space, a rear seat backrest that can be folded down in a 40:20:40 ratio and a low loading sill make it a versatile companion for family, work and leisure.
In addition, there are technologies that could only have been dreamed of in 1963: the adaptive Intelli-Lux HD light, standard Intelli-Seats and a wide selection of electrified drives – from the hybrid to the all-electric Astra Sports Tourer Electric with a range of up to 445 kilometres. A lot has changed: the drive, the technology, the comfort. The idea has remained. To build a car that matches the needs of its owners as well as possible.
